At University Centre Dental Associates, Dr. Maurice Haynes offers porcelain onlays as part of his top-notch general dental services for local residents in and around Washington, DC, including residents in Greenbelt, MD, and Bowie, MD, as well as Prince George’s County, Montgomery County, and Anne Arundel County.
For rear teeth that don’t have enough damage to need a crown or bridge, porcelain onlays may be an option for restoring normal tooth structure after damage and tooth decay.
A porcelain onlay is needed for more severe damage and covers the entire chewing surface—one or more cusps. Along with porcelain inlays, porcelain onlays are a strong, supportive solution for moderately damaged teeth.
What Is a Porcelain Onlay?
Porcelain onlays are used to treat tooth decay that extends to one or more of the cusps of the teeth. They are placed very similarly to porcelain inlays.
How Is a Porcelain Onlay Procedure Performed?
At the patient’s first visit to University Centre Dental Associates, Dr. Maurice Haynes will take an impression of the prepared tooth, and a temporary onlay will be placed over the tooth. This impression is sent to a dental lab, where technicians will create an onlay according to the specifications of that tooth.
During the patient’s second visit, the temporary onlay will be removed, and the permanent restoration will be placed on the tooth and secured using a strong dental resin.
Similar to porcelain inlays, porcelain onlays are created from tooth-colored material, making them virtually invisible.
What Are the Benefits of a Porcelain Onlay?
Porcelain onlays have several advantages, including the following:
- More tooth structure is conserved because they require minimal removal of a tooth’s surface
- Patients can avoid the need for more extensive treatment, such as with crowns, bridges, or implants
- They are long lasting
- They have minimal side effects and risk
- They use more conservative methods
- They provide more pleasing aesthetics
Who Is a Candidate for a Porcelain Onlay?
The best candidates are those who have healthy enough teeth to not need a crown but who have too much damage for a filling.
