What Is Prophylaxis?
Dental prophylaxis refers to cleaning the teeth thoroughly to stop the progression of gingivitis and periodontal disease, especially after periodontal treatment is completed. Periodontal teeth cleaning can remove tartar buildup, get rid of unsightly stains, and reduce bad breath (halitosis).
Periodontal prophylaxis treatment is usually performed in four stages
- X-ray and examination to determine the extent of bone and gum recession and to identify areas that may need more attention
- Supragingival cleaning of the area above the gum line
- Subgingival cleaning of the area below the gum line
- Root planing, or smoothing the tooth root to remove stubborn bacteria
