What Is Dental Bonding?

Dental bonding is a technique in which the dentist applies a tooth-colored resin material, made from durable plastic, to the affected teeth and with a special light, hardens the material, ultimately “bonding” it to the tooth. Finally, and the tooth is polished to restore or enhance a person’s smile.

Bonding can lighten stains, close gaps, and fix crooked teeth. Essentially, bonding covers natural flaws in your teeth

How Long Does Dental Bonding Last?

The bonding composites that are used today generally last about seven to 11 years, providing proper care and routine check-ups are followed.

How Is Dental Bonding Performed?

Dr. Haynes will apply a mild etching solution to the teeth to create small crevices in the tooth’s enamel structure. These crevices create a mildly rough surface that allows a durable resin to bond materials to the teeth. The resin is then placed on the teeth in layers and hardened with a high-intensity light. This process continues until the final layer of resin has been applied. The bonded material is then sculpted and polished to fit your affected tooth and to match all of the other teeth.

The resin comes in several shades so that it can be perfectly matched; however, due to the layers that are involved, this type of procedure can take a bit longer. Typical bonding takes about an hour to two hours, depending on each patient’s particular case.

Who Is a Candidate for Dental Bonding?

Anyone who has close, small gaps between their teeth or who has chipped or cracked teeth may be a candidate for bonding. This technique also is used on for patients who have discolored teeth, uneven teeth, gum recession, or tooth decay. The resin material is porous, so smokers will discover that their bonding will yellow.

Bonding FAQs

How long does dental bonding last on front teeth?

Generally, dental bonding will last between 4 and 8 years on the front teeth. However, keep in mind that eating habits and other factors can impact the longevity of your dental bonding.

Does bonding ruin your teeth?

Bonding does not ruin the teeth. Over time, the bonding itself may fade or become damaged, but it can be easily repaired. Furthermore, the bonding does not cause any damage to tooth enamel, which means that the underlying tooth will remain unaffected.

How long after tooth bonding can I eat?

Dental bonding hardens rapidly, so you will be able to eat and drink immediately following your visit. We may recommend avoiding specific foods for a few hours to prevent any damage to the bonding, but there are little to no eating restrictions after tooth bonding.

Does composite bonding look natural?

Yes! The color of composite bonding will be matched to your natural tooth color prior to the bonding process. This means that it should blend in with the teeth and look completely natural after your appointment.

Can a bonded tooth be whitened?

No, standard teeth-whitening products will have no effect on a bonded tooth. The only way to achieve a whiter tooth bonding is to receive a new bonding that is a whiter color.
