Orthodontics in Washington, DCThere are several factors that you should consider when picking the perfect toothbrush. Regardless of manual or powered (although most dentists will recommend powered), consider these characteristics:

Size: A toothbrush should be able to easily fit into the mouth. For most adults, a toothbrush head that is one half-inch wide and one-inch tall will be the easiest to use and the most effective. You should be able to comfortable hold the handle of the toothbrush in your hand.

Bristles: For most people, dentists recommend soft bristles. This will be most comfortable and safest. Medium and hard bristles can actually damage the gums, root surface, and protective tooth enamel. This can lead to sensitivity to heat and cold or certain foods and drinks.

Dentist recommendation: If you’re still unsure, ask your dentist for a recommendation or look for manual or powered toothbrushes that have earned the American Dental Association (ADA) Seal of Approval.

For children, select a toothbrush with the following characteristics:

  • Soft bristles (for gentle cleaning)
  • Very small heads (designed for baby teeth)
  • Large handles (easier for children to grip)
