What Is a Dental Cleaning?

A dental cleaning, or one that is done in a dental office, is a procedure in which the dentist or dental hygienist uses various tools to deep clean the gums and the surfaces of the teeth.

What Is Involved in the Teeth Cleaning Process?

Usually, an ultrasonic cleaner and spray of water are first applied to remove tartar and plaque from the gums and teeth. Next, the dentist will scrape any remaining tartar and plaque off with a metal scraper. After this part of the process, the teeth and roots may be sanded and smoothed to get rid of more plaque and bacteria. A rotary toothbrush and gritty paste are then used for polishing the teeth. The teeth are then flossed, and a fluoride treatment is applied. If teeth have not been cleaned in a long time, then a process known as debridement is used to remove the excessive tartar and plaque build-up.

How Often Should the Teeth Be Cleaned?

The ADA (American Dental Association) advises that teeth be cleaned at least once a year. Patients who have a history of periodontal disease should have their teeth cleaned more frequently. Patients who suffer from heart disease or diabetes should also have cleanings more often.

Why Do the Gums Bleed after a Dental Cleaning?

If a lot of plaque and bacteria have built up in the mouth over time, cleaning can irritate the gums to the point where they will bleed. The sensitivity may last a day or so after the procedure.

What Types of Instruments Are Used for a Cleaning?

Instruments that are used to clean the teeth during a dental visit include an ultrasonic cleaner, used to loosen tartar and plaque, and a water spray for rinsing away the debris from the teeth. Curved metal tools, called curettes and scales, are designed to conform to the shape of the teeth and are used to scrape away excess tartar and residue. A polisher with a rubber tip is used to polish the surface teeth. A prophylaxis or gritty paste is used along with an instrument during the cleaning procedure.
