What Is Gum Disease?

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, refers to a variety of conditions ranging from mild gum inflammation to serious disease resulting in major damage to bone and tissue. If left untreated, gum disease can even lead to the loss of teeth.

Periodontal disease is caused by a combination of plaque, tartar, and bacteria; without proper oral care, bacteria and food particles create a buildup of plaque on the teeth. Plaque can harden into tartar, which cannot be removed with at-home treatment.

What Are the Signs of Gum Disease?

Gingivitis, the milder type of gum disease, may cause the gums to become swollen, look red, and bleed easily. Bad breath commonly occurs as well. Without treatment, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, in which the gums pull away from the teeth and form “pockets” that may accumulate food, plaque, debris, and bacteria. In advanced cases, gum tissue, bone, or teeth may be lost.

How Is Gum Disease Treated?

Gingivitis is often treated through improved oral hygiene habits, such as brushing and flossing after every meal, and professional dental cleanings (prophylaxis). Where applicable, patients should also refrain from smoking or address uncontrolled diabetes.

In more advanced cases, recommendations may include scaling and root planing, oral surgery, soft tissue grafts, or antibiotics.
