Porcelain Inlays in Washington, DC

At University Centre Dental Associates, Dr. Maurice Haynes offers porcelain inlays as part of his top-notch general dental services for local residents in and around Washington, DC, including residents in Greenbelt, MD, and Bowie, MD, as well as Prince George’s County, Montgomery County, and Anne Arundel County.

For rear teeth that don’t have enough damage to need a crown or bridge, inlays are great methods for restoring normal tooth structure after damage and tooth decay.

An inlay replaces the tooth structure within the cusp tips of the tooth. They can also be used to replace fillings. It is a strong, supportive solution for moderately damaged teeth.

What Is a Dental Inlay?

A porcelain inlay is used to treat decayed or damaged teeth that lie within their indented top surfaces, between the cusps of the teeth. They also can be effective in replacing old or damaged metal fillings.

How Is a Porcelain Inlay Procedure Performed?

Placement of a dental inlay usually requires two appointments. During the first visit to University Centre Dental Associates, Dr. Maurice Haynes will make an impression of the affected tooth and will make a temporary inlay to be placed over that tooth. Dr. Haynes will send that impression to a dental lab, which will create the inlay that matches the patient’s individual specifications.

During the second visit, the temporary inlay will be removed, and the permanent one will be placed over the tooth.

Because inlays are designed from durable, tooth-colored porcelain, they are much more natural looking than metal fillings, and their customized nature allows Dr. Haynes to bond them securely to the tooth’s surface, strengthening the teeth and preventing bacteria from entering.

What Are the Benefits of a Dental Inlay?

Porcelain inlays have several benefits, including the following:

  • Repairs extensive tooth infection or damage without removing the outer portion of the tooth
  • Uses more conservative methods
  • Provides more pleasing aesthetics
  • Strengthens a tooth’s structure
  • Is long lasting
  • Prevents the need for extensive treatment later on
  • Has minimal side effects and risks

Who Is a Candidate for a Porcelain Inlay?

The best candidates are those who have healthy enough teeth to not need a crown but who have too much damage for a filling.
