Why Is Dental Hygiene Important?

Dental hygiene is important for oral health and for the prevention of cavities. By making a concerted effort each day to brush your teeth and practice good oral hygiene, you will also reduce the expense of restorations and other dental repairs.

When You Should Brush

Brush approximately 5 minutes after each meal. A soft-bristle brush or electric toothbrush should be used along with toothpaste that contains fluoride. If you are traveling, take a travel-type toothbrush along with you in your suitcase. While the fluoride helps prevent cavities, it’s the activity of brushing that cleans the teeth.

What Is the Best Way to Brush?

Brushing, when done correctly, takes only about two minutes. Properly brush the teeth by using circular and short strokes. Concentrate on the gum line as well as the back teeth and the area around each restoration. Brush the outside surface of the upper and lower teeth, and then brush the inside of the same teeth. Next, brush the chewing surfaces and finish by brushing the tongue.

Flossing the Teeth

Flossing is also a necessary part of good dental hygiene. The activity is useful in removing plaque, especially in areas of the mouth that are difficult to reach, such as under the gum line and in between the teeth. Flossing can prevent both decay and periodontal disease, which results from a build-up of plaque.

To floss properly, begin with an 18-inch piece of floss, winding most of the string around each of your middle fingers. Use about an inch of the floss for the activity. Hold the floss between your index fingers and thumbs, then gently slide the thread in between the teeth using an up and down motion. Make sure the floss is curved at the tooth’s base so you can reach under the gum line. Never use the floss forcefully. Floss is available in waxed and unwaxed nylon for ease of use.

What Other Accessories Are Recommended for Good Dental Hygiene?

Patients can also benefit from such dental accessories as a Water-Pik or by rinsing with fluoride in the form of a gel or rinse. In addition, chewing disclosing tablets, which make plaque visible, can help the dental patient identify problem areas when they are brushing.
